The worst thing about this
restaurant is it's location.
The soviet style concrete
monolith of a building that
it is located in may be
nostalgic for some but for
most of us it just needs to
be replaced with something
more suited to the Old Town
given that it’s just outside
of the city walls. I have
walked past it many times
after living in Tallinn for
a year but only when going
to the main post office, it's
location seems to be on the
wrong side of the road or the wrong
corner so as to allow it to
go somewhat unnoticed. In
spite of it's very central
location, it really doesn’t
attract that many tourists,
most of whom come here for
the Old Town experience and
therefore prefer to eat
within the city walls.
The
best thing is that the food
is better that you would
expect, given the
restaurant’s slightly dated
appearance.
The
restaurants name really does
say it all. If you like
steak this place is a good
option. Ox steak is even on
offer! The variety of sauces
and styles is good, the
portions large, the service
is polite if a little
understated and the wine
list good and very
descriptive.
The
menu has wine suggestions
for each of the entrees of
which there are about 10 non
stake options. There is also
a good selection of starters
but the desert menu is
basic.
One way
I like to measure a
restaurants dedication to
going the extra mile is with
the type of bread they
serve. Steakhouse did
unfortunately let the side
down in that department.
Almost all restaurants in
Tallinn will lay on bread
whether you’re paying a lot
or a little for your meal so
it’s a good measure.
Overall
the food can be described as
“serious”, the sauces are
very tasty and cuts well
selected. Along with my
fellow reviewer I did spend
the balance of the evening
feeling very thirsty. We
both agreed this could be
down to an over use of salt,
this however was not noticed
during the meal. Beware the
garlic potatoes, no
subtleties here!
One
down fall is that the range
of size of steak can be
limited depending on what
style you want. There may be
some practical reason for
this but I’m not seeing it!
The
restaurant is clean as were
its bathrooms although no
paper towels were provided
just the frustrating
blowers. There is a no
smoking area but it’s hardly
separated from the bulk of
the restaurant which is
permissive.
Bottom
line, this is one of a few
real carnivore options in
Tallinn, all-round ok, but I
would have to say a little
over priced. If you’re
really up for some steak
though, I would have to
recommend it as the best
option for its price
bracket.
