Bakuu is a relative new comer to
Tallinn having opened its doors in
Summer of 2005.
I noticed it many time on my
usual route in and out of the Old
Town and even checked the menu out a
couple of times. However its wasn't
until January of 2006 that I first
visited on the recommendation of a
fellow expat.
Bakuu's menu is not for
vegetarians. Its main constituent is
various types of kebabs (shashlek),
at least that's what the menu says!
Typically shashlik is a aka shish
kebab in western parts but what you
may find here depending on what you
order is not a skewered selection if
meat pieces but a platter of them
I not saying that a bad thing at
all, just not worry of what you get
served isn't exactly what you
thought you would be getting,
chances are your order was taken
correctly.
To cut a long story short this
place gets the thumbs up.
restaurants come in all price ranges
so sizing them up as equals isn't
really fair. You may find better
restaurants in Tallinn but this is
definitely one of the best value.
The servings are large, the food
tasty and the services is usually
good. On my first visit the services
was questionable whilst the food was
as good as my second official
review. Services during my
unannounced review was
unquestionable.
Don't expect a lot on the way of
starter or desert options though
they do exist and don't expect
dipping sauce options. The very
popular and recommendable mixed
shashlik for 2 comes just with a
tomato dipping sauce. I did however
ask for "Hapukoor", a light Estonian
sour cream which was provided
without hesitation
The restaurant's environment is
also praise worthy, being new it
hasn't had time to wear. It is
comfortable and maintains the kind
of characteristics you would both
expect and appreciate form a Old
Town establishment.
In conclusion I suggest checking
it out whilst the prices are still
low. I don't think it will be too
long before the management figures
out that they only need to make some
small changes to propel the
restaurant comfortably into the next
price bracket. |
